Measured from your browser to a nearby Cloudflare server. Uses well under 1 MB of data.

What is ping?

Ping is the time, in milliseconds, that a tiny message takes to travel from your device to a server and back. The lower the number, the faster your connection reacts. It is different from speed: you can have a fast connection with a high ping, or a slower one with a low ping.

Ping decides how quick a game feels, how natural a video call sounds and how fast a page starts to load. If your internet speed looks fine but things still feel laggy, ping and jitter are the first numbers to check.

What is a good ping?

PingWhat it means
Under 20 msExcellent. Feels instant.
20 to 50 msGood for almost everything, including online games.
50 to 100 msOkay. Fine for calls and browsing, some games feel slower.
Over 100 msHigh. You may notice lag in games and delay in calls.

Rough guide only. Each game and app has its own needs.

How to lower your ping

Ping jumping around or WiFi dropping? Run the longer connection stability test to count lag spikes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ping?

As a rough guide, under 50 ms is good for most online games, under 100 ms is fine for video calls, and under 150 ms is fine for browsing. Each game and app has its own needs, and the server you connect to matters as much as your connection.

Is this the same as the ping command?

Not exactly. A browser cannot send the ICMP packets the ping command uses. This test measures the round trip time to a nearby Cloudflare server over HTTPS, so numbers can be a little higher than the command prompt shows. It is still a good check of your connection quality.

What is jitter?

Jitter is how much your ping changes from one check to the next. A connection can have a low average ping and still feel bad if the ping jumps around. Low jitter means a steady connection, which matters most for calls and games.

Why does my ping change between tests?

Ping depends on Wi-Fi signal, other devices using the network, how busy your provider is and the route your data takes. Small changes are normal. Run the test two or three times and look at the typical value, not a single result.

How much data does the ping test use?

Very little. Each ping is a tiny request, so the whole test uses well under one megabyte. That makes it a good choice when your mobile data is limited, unlike a full speed test.

Does this show my ping to a game server?

No. It measures the connection between your device and a nearby test server, not your game server. Use it to check the health of your own connection, then check the in-game ping for the server you play on.
